Timber pole retaining walls remain one of the most cost-effective and proven solutions for residential and rural retaining in Canterbury. When driven rather than just placed in a hole, the poles achieve significantly greater structural capacity - the driven section resists both vertical load and horizontal earth pressure in a way that a bored-and-backfilled post cannot match.

This project along the Kaiapoi River required driven timber piles due to the proximity to the waterway and the soil conditions in the riparian zone. Driven installation also minimises the amount of excavation required close to the stream bank, reducing disturbance to the waterway environment.

Driven vs Bored Pole Installations

The choice between driven and bored pile installation depends on soil type, engineering specification, and site access. In Canterbury's mixed alluvial soils, driven poles often achieve better bearing capacity faster - but the decision should always be guided by the structural engineer's specification. TBT works closely with Canterbury's engineering firms and will follow the engineer's requirements precisely on every job.
